This Section XII is the current job description of a principal.
Reports to: Superintendent
Minimum Requirements: Valid Leadership Certification in Administration and Supervision; a Master's degree or higher is required; a minimum of five years' acceptable school experience; and ability to effectively communicate with students, staff, parents, and the public.
Primary Function: To direct and supervise all activities of the school to develop and maintain a premier educational program within the policies of the Board of Education and administrative regulations of the Superintendent.
Performance Responsibilities
The Principal:
- Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance.
- Maintains high standards of student conduct and enforces discipline as necessary, affording due process rights to all students.
- Sets high expectations for student behavior.
- Acts as the instructional leader of the school, using leadership and effective communication skills to increase student achievement by creating an increase in quantity and quality of effective teacher collaboration, professional learning, and instructional best practices in the classroom.
- Implements state and local mandated curriculum.
- Evaluates and monitors the implementation of the school's curriculum via e-walks, observations, and review of teacher lesson plans.
- Implements appropriate student performance assessment programs.
- Ensures Standards Based Instruction is fully implemented, monitored, and practiced at the school.
- Ensures a Response to Intervention (RTI) protocol is implemented, monitored, and practiced at the school.
- Increases parental and community involvement with specific plans - parent and community volunteer hours.
- Monitors student progress to ensure academic success.
- Reports results of student assessment programs to appropriate personnel.
- Utilizes various data, including, but not limited to, achievement scores, grades, formal assessment results, summative assessment results, student discipline reports, perception surveys, to create a school-wide approach to raising achievement and creating a positive school climate.
- Uses data to drive instruction with the use of a "Data Room."
- Uses student assessment results to improve and enhance the instructional program.
- Sets high expectations for staff performance in accordance with state and local policies.
- Promotes the maximum use of instructional time.
- Sets high expectations for student academic performance.
- Establishes conditions in the school which support a safe, secure, and well-maintained physical environment for the students and the staff.
- Attends to student discipline in a timely manner.
- Communicates effectively with individuals and groups within the school system.
- Plans and supervises fire drills and an emergency preparedness program.
- Communicates effectively with a variety of public entities - governmental and community agencies.
- Responsible for the construction of a Teacher and Student Handbook that is reviewed and adjusted yearly.
- Uses resources to enhance instruction.
- Directs and supervises the ongoing development of the School Improvement Plan (SIP), and coordinates communication of the SIP with the School Council, Board of Education, and Faculty. The SIP will be monitored and updated on E-board.
- Principals at Title I school will involve parents in the development of Compacts, Parental Involvement Policy, and Procedures.
- Bases the annual comprehensive improvement plan on the current program, student, and staff evaluation data.
- Maintains a systematic and efficient accounting system for all funds within the school in accordance with state and local regulations.
- Organizes, trains and ensures the school has a procedure for dealing swiftly with bullying and harassment.
- Requisitions, distributes, and maintains inventories of materials, supplies, and equipment used in the school.
- Works cooperatively in the recruiting, screening, hiring, training, assigning, and evaluation of the school's staff as defined by board policy and regulations.
- Gives direction to the athletic program and/or other special activities.
- Certifies the compliance of individual students with the requirements for promotion or graduation, on the basis of records and reports from teachers.
- Attends and supervises athletic events and other extra-curricular activities.
- Shall exhibit a professional attitude and demeanor at all times in dealing with the board, school administration, fellow employees, parents, students, and the public.
- Responsible for proper use and preservation of buildings, grounds, furnishing, equipment, and facilities of the school.
- Demonstrates loyalty to the school system and administration.
- Responsible for creating and implementing an energy conservation plan that minimizes the costs from energy consumption by strategically controlling the use of energy from appliances, HVAC units, lighting, and other energy consumption peripherals.
- Treats confidential information and sensitive situations with discretion and avoids gossip.
- A positive ambassador for Dade County Schools to all stakeholders of the school.
- Adheres to federal and state laws, as well as Board Policies.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
